As he counts the stairs in the school, takes pictures of street signs, and dries sweet potatoes on the classroom balcony, Hayashi's candid, unapologetic manner subtly attracts the attention of both classmates and outsiders. Hayashi is refreshingly and unabashedly authentic to himself in a society where conformity is the norm.
